It gives Pokhara its calmer rhythm and sense of openness. Even when you are using it as a base rather than a destination in itself, the lake shapes the whole experience of the city.
Hire a brightly painted wooden row boat (a doonga) — self-row, or with a boatman — or a pedal boat from the Lakeside shore. Most trips head for Tal Barahi, the small island temple near the middle of the lake: a two-storey pagoda shrine to the goddess Barahi, reachable only by boat. The short row out and back is the classic Phewa outing.
On clear mornings and evenings the lake mirrors the Annapurnas and the fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre, with the World Peace Pagoda on the ridge above. Sunrise is calmest; sunset is the most atmospheric.
