Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), at 4,130 m, sits inside the Annapurna Sanctuary — a high glacial basin reached by following the Modi Khola gorge deep into the mountains. From the lodges you are surrounded on almost every side by peaks: Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and the unmistakable fishtail of Machhapuchhre.
Why go
Few places put you this close to the high Himalaya without mountaineering. Sunrise and sunset turn the whole ring of peaks gold, and the sense of standing inside the mountains rather than looking at them is what makes ABC the most loved destination in the region.
Altitude matters here
At 4,130 m, altitude is a real consideration. Most itineraries gain height gradually over several days from Chhomrong via Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m), which gives reasonable acclimatisation, but mild altitude symptoms still occur. Walk slowly, hydrate, and do not rush the final climb from MBC.
Useful caveat
The approach gorge is avalanche-prone in heavy snow, especially late winter and early spring. Conditions change year to year — always confirm the current state of the trail with lodge owners in Chhomrong or a registered guide before continuing above Deurali.
