Summary
Buddha Jayanti celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha — all said to fall on the same full-moon day. Swayambhunath and Boudhanath fill with pilgrims, butter lamps, and flag-raising; monasteries hold all-day readings, and at Swayambhu a chariot procession carries images of the Buddha around the hill. It is the calmest of the valley's big festival days.
