Chhomrong Teahouses & Bakeries

Some of the trail's best lodges and bakeries at the Sanctuary's gateway.

About this place

Summary

The well-regarded lodges and famous bakeries of Chhomrong (2,170 m), the gateway village to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Some of the best teahouse comfort and food on the whole route, with big views of Annapurna South.

Why we picked it

It combines the best teahouse comfort and food on the Sanctuary route with a spectacular setting at the trek's key gateway.

Good for

ABC trekkers, food lovers, and anyone wanting one comfortable night before or after the high section.

Skip if you are racing the route — but most trekkers are glad they stopped here.

Editorial guide

Chhomrong is many trekkers' favourite overnight on the Annapurna Base Camp route, and not only for the views. Its teahouses are among the most comfortable on the trail, and the village is famous for German-style bakeries serving apple pie, cinnamon rolls, and real coffee — a small luxury before or after the climb to the Sanctuary.

What to expect

Twin rooms (some with attached bathrooms in the better lodges), warm dining halls facing Annapurna South, hot showers for a fee, and reliably good kitchens. Because Chhomrong sits on a steep slope, lodges are spread across several levels of the village.

Useful caveat

This is the natural place to break the journey both going up and coming down — and the last spot with this level of comfort before the higher, simpler lodges toward MBC and ABC. Stock any snacks or supplies here; prices climb sharply higher up.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The classic Annapurna Sanctuary trek: roughly a week of teahouse walking up the Modi Khola gorge into a glacial amphitheatre at 4,130 m, ringed by Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, and a wall of Himalayan giants. The region's signature multi-day trek.

It is the region's definitive trek — the most complete way to walk into the heart of the high Himalaya without technical climbing.
