Indra Sarovar — widely called the Kulekhani reservoir — fills a valley about 40 km southwest of Kathmandu, below Chitlang near the village of Markhu. The hydropower dam created Nepal's largest man-made lake, and its still water against terraced hills has turned it into a popular weekend boating spot.
Why visit
It is the most accessible big-water getaway from the valley: paddle and motor boats, lakeside fish restaurants, and a calm, scenic setting that pairs perfectly with an overnight in Chitlang.
Highlights
- Boating on Indra Sarovar (paddle and motorboats; short rides from around NPR 150 per person)
- The Markhu suspension bridge over an arm of the lake
- Fresh fish lunches at lakeside eateries in Markhu
- Easy 1.5–2 hour hike between Markhu and Chitlang through terraced farmland
Practical tips
Most people combine Kulekhani with Chitlang as a one-night loop: village stay first, then down to the lake. The drive from Kathmandu takes 2–3 hours; roads are rough in places, so a jeep or sturdy car is best.
