The forested northern rim of the valley is Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park — pine and oak forest, army-checkpoint trailheads at Budhanilkantha, and a steady climb to Shivapuri peak (2,732 m) or shorter loops to Nagi Gompa monastery. On clear days the Langtang range lines the horizon; birdlife includes the spiny babbler, Nepal's only endemic bird.
